First Families: The MacArthur Family

Hugh MacArthur, farmer

Hugh MacArthur was born on March 31, 1859, in Tiverton, Bruce County, Ontario. His father, Donald MacArthur (1814-1876) was born in Scotland, as was his mother Anna Bella McCallum (1820-1907). Hugh was one of eight children.

Hugh married Catherine “Katie” Rowan in 1883 in Kincardine, Ontario.

In the 1901 Canadian Census, Hugh was living on Sea Island in British Columbia, with his wife and five children. He was a farmer.

Hugh died on Sea Island, in 1951. His residence was listed as 572 Miller Road. Hugh was buried in Mountain View Cemetery, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Hugh’s wife Katie had died on Sea Island in 1924. She is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery.

Hugh and Catherine had five children: Donald MacArthur (1884-1907), Margaret “Maggie” Turner née MacArthur (1885-1973), Annabelle MacArthur (1892-1983), Archibald MacArthur (1897-1945), and Rena MacArthur (1900-1982).
